Crown Land around Lake Nipigon
Lake Nipigon is the largest lake lying entirely within Ontario — a cold, island-studded inland sea north of Superior, ringed almost completely by crown land. The Nipigon River, draining it south to Lake Superior, produced the world-record brook trout in 1915 and still grows the biggest speckles on the continent; lake trout, walleye and northern pike fill the lake itself. Highway 11 climbs through Orient Bay past a wall of diabase palisades that becomes a world-class ice-climbing venue each winter, and the town of Nipigon at the river mouth is the service hub. This is remote, big-water country where an outboard and a map open hundreds of kilometres of empty shoreline. This page rounds up the region's public land, fishing spots, campgrounds and road trips.
