Crown Land in Wabakimi
Wabakimi is canoe wilderness on a scale the rest of Ontario can't match: the provincial park alone covers roughly 892,000 hectares — the province's second-largest — and the crown land around it stretches the wild country far beyond any boundary line. The gateway is Armstrong, a former rail town at the end of Highway 527 about two and a half hours north of Thunder Bay, from which trips launch by float plane, outfitter shuttle or VIA Rail's flag-stop trains along the CN line. The Armstrong and Kagianagami crown lands begin 7 km from the anchor, Whitesand Provincial Park protects a waterway 31 km out, and woodland caribou still drift through the black spruce. Walleye and pike fill nearly every lake, with brook trout in the moving water. This page rounds up the region's public land, fishing spots, campgrounds and road trips.
