The Itinerary
Algonquin Provincial Park, Canada's oldest provincial park (1893), covers 7,653 km² between Ottawa and Toronto. The Highway 60 Corridor crosses it east-west for 56 km — the park's only public road, where 8 trails, 3 museums and a signature access lake — Lake of Two Rivers — concentrate.
From Huntsville, the base town and Muskoka hub, you enter from the west. The Parkway opens in May and stays open year-round (daily fee required). 8 interpretive trails between km 3 and 56 each offer an ecosystem: Whiskey Rapids (falls), Hardwood Lookout (view), Mizzy Lake (15 km, wildlife), Big Pines (centuries-old pines), Lookout Trail (360° panorama), Booth's Rock (lake view).
The Algonquin Visitor Centre (km 43) holds exhibits and a panoramic restaurant. The Logging Museum (km 54) tells the forestry story. Whitney, the east terminus, is famous for nightly wolf howls in August (official Ontario Parks program). Legendary fall colour late September.
