The Itinerary

The Agawa Canyon Tour Train, departing downtown Sault Ste. Marie, is one of Canada's most legendary rail excursions: 184 km round trip through Ontario boreal forest and landscapes that inspired the Group of Seven (notably Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson).

The train descends into Agawa Canyon, a 175 m deep granite gorge carved by the Agawa River. 90-minute stop at the canyon floor: trails to waterfalls (Bridal Veil Falls, Black Beaver Falls), Lookout viewing platform (300 stairs). In fall, the explosion of colour (maple, birch, larch) is the signature draw — book in spring.

Sault Ste. Marie, the base town, is famous for the Soo Locks (the world's busiest by tonnage), the Bushplane Heritage Centre (forestry aviation) and its international bridge to Sault Michigan. Algoma Country is also a renowned salmon fishing and hunting destination.
