The Itinerary

Blue Mountain is the largest ski resort in Ontario, built on the face of the Niagara Escarpment where it rises above Nottawasaga Bay a couple of kilometres from downtown Collingwood. It is not a big mountain by western standards — the vertical is around 220 m — but it carries a large number of runs across a wide face, holds snow well thanks to lake-effect squalls off Georgian Bay, and runs one of the most extensive snowmaking operations in the country. The pedestrian village at its base keeps the place busy in every season.

The drive from Toronto is about 160 km: Highway 400 north to Barrie, then Highway 26 west through Stayner into Collingwood. Winter brings alpine skiing and snowboarding, night skiing, snowshoeing and an outdoor skating loop in the village. In summer the same slopes carry lift-served mountain biking, a ridge-runner mountain coaster and ziplines, and the bay below is warm enough to swim at Sunset Point in Collingwood.

Scenic Caves Nature Adventures sits on the escarpment above the resort and combines a long suspension footbridge over the valley with a set of limestone crevice caves that stay cold well into summer. Collingwood itself has a restored 19th-century main street, a working harbour and a growing cluster of craft distillers and brewers, linked by the Collingwood Trail network. Weekends in ski season are crowded and the village parking fills; midweek is far more pleasant, and the shoulder months of April and November are very quiet.
