The Itinerary

Cobourg sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario about 110 km east of Toronto, and it is one of the more graceful small towns on the lake. Its centrepiece is Victoria Hall, completed in 1860 and opened by the Prince of Wales, a civic building so ambitious for a town of its size that it nearly bankrupted the place. It still contains a courtroom modelled on the Old Bailey and a concert hall, and it anchors a downtown of intact 19th-century commercial blocks.

Highway 401 gets you there in a little over an hour, though the parallel Highway 2 through Port Hope is the better drive if you have time; Port Hope has one of the best-preserved main streets in Ontario and is worth its own stop. Cobourg's beach is the real draw: a wide crescent of sand beside the harbour, which is genuinely unusual on a lake shore that is mostly shingle and bluff. Victoria Park runs along behind it with a bandshell and a boardwalk.

The Sandcastle Festival each August has been running for decades and fills the beach with competitors. The harbour holds a marina and a working waterfront, and the downtown carries galleries, antique dealers and restaurants. Inland, Northumberland County has developed a cluster of wineries, cideries and farm stays, and the Northumberland Hills carry good cycling routes. Summer weekends are crowded and beach parking fills early; September is warm, quiet and considerably easier.
