The Itinerary
Sauble Beach runs for about 11 km along the Lake Huron shore on the west side of the Bruce Peninsula, and its great advantage over the Georgian Bay beaches is that it faces west. The sunsets here are the reason people return, and the whole village turns out for them on summer evenings. The sand is fine and the water shelves gently, and the place has kept a retro, low-rise character that Wasaga largely lost.
The drive from Toronto is roughly 220 km: Highway 400 north, then Highway 89 and Highway 6 through Owen Sound, or the quieter run up Highway 10 through Shelburne and Flesherton. The village itself is compact, with a boardwalk strip of vintage diners, mini-golf, bike rentals and beach shops, presided over by a much-photographed statue of a dog named Pluto that has served as the unofficial mascot for decades. Sauble Falls Provincial Park lies a few minutes north, where the Sauble River drops over a series of limestone ledges that people swim and slide in when the water is low.
This stretch of shoreline is a nesting site for the piping plover, an endangered shorebird, and sections of the beach are roped off during nesting season with monitors on site; the closures are small and well signed. Sauble makes a good base for the wider peninsula: Bruce Peninsula National Park and Tobermory are about an hour and a half north, which turns a beach weekend into a longer exploration.
