The Itinerary
The Niagara wine region has 100+ wineries across two main sub-appellations: the Niagara Escarpment (south) and Niagara Peninsula (north, including Twenty Valley). At the south of the peninsula, Twenty Valley — named for "20 Mile Creek" — is the epicentre of Canadian reds.
From Hamilton, Highway 81 (King Street) crosses Beamsville, Vineland, Jordan and on toward Niagara-on-the-Lake along the base of the Niagara Escarpment. Iconic wineries: Cave Spring (4-star Cellars Restaurant), Tawse, Henry of Pelham (5th generation), Peller Estates, Inniskillin (pioneer of Canadian icewine), and Two Sisters.
Jordan Village keeps its 19th-century heritage character: gourmet restaurants, distilleries, cheese makers (Upper Canada Cheese). Niagara-on-the-Lake, the terminus, is Canada's "prettiest small town" per many lists: impeccable colonial architecture, world-renowned Shaw Festival theatre, Prince of Wales Hotel. Pair with Niagara Falls 20 min away.
