The Itinerary
The Bruce Peninsula, a limestone finger between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron, is one of Ontario's most prized nature destinations. It's also the north end of the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
From Wiarton — famous for Wiarton Willie, the albino weather groundhog — Highway 6 heads north through Lion's Head (heritage village, 110 m cliffs), Dyer's Bay and Cabot Head Lighthouse. The Bruce Trail — Canada's oldest and longest marked hiking trail (900 km from Niagara to Tobermory) — parallels.
Tobermory, at the tip, is a unique port town: terminus for the Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Manitoulin, and gateway to Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park. The Grotto in Bruce Peninsula NP (turquoise water in a limestone cave) is one of Canada's most iconic photos. Flowerpot Island, reached by boat, is named for its eroded pinnacles. World-class diving on 22 wrecks preserved by cold water.
