Crown Land Near Greenstone

Greenstone is the sprawling municipality along Highway 11 north of Lake Nipigon that takes in Geraldton, Longlac, Nakina and Beardmore, and its centre, Geraldton, is an old gold-mining town where the bush starts at the last street. Kenogamisis Lake wraps around the townsite — Barton Bay, Magnet Bay and Hardrock Bay are all within 5 km and the main lake 7 km — with Yvonne, Ashton, Dafoe and Annette lakes closer still; 107 fishing spots sit within 25 km, walleye and northern pike country almost without exception. MacLeod Provincial Park, on Kenogamisis Lake 6 km from town, is the local campground, and beyond it the public land is essentially continuous: the Long Lake and Longlac North conservation reserves are 34 km east, the South Nakina general-use crown lands 41 km north and Nakina Moraine Provincial Park 47 km. Wild Goose Lake Campground, 17 km away, is the only other organized campground — the rest is free crown-land camping. Frequently Asked Questions

Almost everything outside the townsites is crown land — MacLeod Provincial Park is 6 km from Geraldton, the Long Lake and Longlac North conservation reserves are 34 km east, and the South Nakina crown lands and Nakina Moraine Provincial Park are 41 to 47 km north, with unbroken boreal forest between them.

Kenogamisis Lake is the obvious choice, with Barton Bay, Magnet Bay and Hardrock Bay all within 5 km of Geraldton, plus Yvonne Lake (2.3 km), Ashton Lake (2.9 km), Dafoe Lake (3.1 km) and Hutchison Lake (6.6 km) — over a hundred spots within 25 km, mostly walleye and pike water, and Long Lake at Longlac 28 km east. A valid Ontario fishing licence is required.

Yes — dispersed camping on crown land is free for Canadian residents for up to 21 days at any one site, and the lakes off the logging roads north and south of Highway 11 are full of boat-launch and shoreline sites. MacLeod Provincial Park (6 km) and Wild Goose Lake Campground (17 km) are the two serviced campgrounds if you want facilities.

Geraldton is about 280 km northeast of Thunder Bay, roughly three and a half hours by Highway 11/17 and then Highway 11 around the east side of Lake Nipigon through Beardmore — the Nipigon River and Orient Bay palisades make the drive itself worthwhile.

Regulations

A valid Ontario fishing licence and Outdoors Card are required on Kenogamisis Lake and every other water here; check the Fisheries Management Zone summary for the Greenstone area, since walleye slot sizes and possession limits differ from southern Ontario and some lakes carry their own exceptions. MacLeod Provincial Park charges Ontario Parks camping and day-use fees. Crown-land camping is free for Canadian residents (21-day limit at any one site) and requires a paid permit for non-residents of Canada. Fire bans are common in dry summers, logging roads are shared with active haul trucks, and cell service ends a few kilometres off Highway 11 — tell someone your route.
