Crown Land on the Spanish River

12 crown land sites 8 fishing spots 6 campgrounds

The Spanish River is northern Ontario's classic whitewater canoe trip — days of swifts, class I-II rapids and pine-walled gorges funnelling south from Duke Lake and Spanish Lake toward Agnew Lake and the mill town of Espanola, protected along the way as Spanish River Provincial Park. The country around the lower river is thick with public land: The West Branch general use area right at the anchor, the Acheson Lake enhanced management area 7 km out, the old-growth Flat Creek Old Pine conservation reserve at 10 km, and the River Aux Sables waterway park about 18 km west, while the river itself fishes for walleye, pike and smallmouth from Agnew Lake down. Highway 6 continues south past Espanola to Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world. This page rounds up the region's public land, fishing spots, campgrounds and road trips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — the river corridor is Spanish River Provincial Park, but crown land surrounds it: the West Branch country at the anchor point, Acheson Lake 7 km out, and the Flat Creek Old Pine reserve with its centuries-old white pines about 10 km away.

On the crown land around the river, yes — free for Canadian residents for up to 21 days at any one site (paid permit for non-residents of Canada). Campsites inside the waterway park itself require an Ontario Parks interior permit.

Most parties put in at The Elbow or Duke Lake off Highway 144, or ride the Sudbury-to-White River train to the upper river, then take out at Agnew Lake Lodge after 3 to 5 days. The rapids run class I-II — solid moving-water skills are expected.

Walleye and northern pike through the river and Agnew Lake, smallmouth bass in the rocky stretches, and brook trout in colder tributaries — all under Zone 10 rules with a valid Ontario licence.

Regulations

A valid Ontario fishing licence with an Outdoors Card is required everywhere, under Zone 10 rules. Camping inside Spanish River Provincial Park requires an Ontario Parks interior permit; on the surrounding crown land, camping is free for Canadian residents (21-day limit at any one site), with a paid permit for non-residents of Canada. Water levels swing hard through spring — the rapids that are friendly in July can be pushy in May — and logging roads to the put-ins may be rough or gated. Fire bans are common in dry summers.
