Hunting, fishing, hiking and paddling on Prince Edward Island public land
Canada Crown Land
Prince Edward Island is the exception among Canadian provinces: almost all of it is private farmland and woodlot, and less than a tenth is public land. The public land that exists is scattered in small parcels: provincial forest land managed by the Forests, Fish and Wildlife Division, wildlife management areas, natural areas protected under the Natural Areas Protection Act, provincial parks, and Prince Edward Island National Park along the north shore. The map shows the provincial properties that are open to hunting and trapping, with their limits, along with the land held by conservation groups such as Island Nature Trust and Nature Conservancy of Canada, which is private. There is no free camping on public land: Tourism PEI says camping is only allowed in licensed campgrounds, including the provincial and national park campgrounds. Anglers come for brook trout, sea-run trout and Atlantic salmon in the island's rivers and ponds.
