The Itinerary
Sandbanks Provincial Park protects the largest freshwater baymouth barrier dune system in the world, built up over roughly 12,500 years as post-glacial currents pushed sand across the mouths of two bays on the Lake Ontario shore of Prince Edward County. The result is a set of dunes rising well above the water, backed by wetland and dune forest, with three distinct beaches that regularly rank among the finest in the province.
The drive from Toronto is about 230 km: Highway 401 east to Belleville, Highway 62 south through Bloomfield, then west toward West Lake. Outlet Beach is the main swimming beach, long and shallow-shelving, which makes it the obvious choice with small children. Sandbanks Beach is the wide strand between the dune and the bay, better for walking than for crowds. Dunes Beach sits below the largest dunes, where a marked trail climbs across shifting sand that genuinely moves from season to season.
This is one of the busiest parks in Ontario and it should not be attempted casually in July or August. Day-use vehicle permits must be reserved in advance, the park routinely hits capacity before mid-morning on summer weekends, and campsites are booked months out. The compensation is the location: the Hillier wineries are twenty minutes north, Picton is fifteen minutes east, and a morning on the beach followed by an afternoon of tastings is the standard county itinerary. September still swims, and the park is open for walking year-round.
