Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Most of Hecla Island and the Grindstone peninsula is provincial park, about 1,085 km² including water, with the Grindstone Point and Hecla Island wildlife refuges inside it and the Observation Point Wildlife Management Area about 27 km away.

In Lake Winnipeg, where the province records walleye, sauger, northern pike, whitefish and channel catfish, and in the Mica, Limestone, Granite and Quartz ponds, 12 to 17 km from Gull Harbour, which have rainbow trout on the province's records.

On Lake Winnipeg the walleye and sauger season is closed from April 6 to May 15, a week longer than elsewhere in the Southern Division. The lake is an Aquatic Invasive Species Control Zone because of zebra mussels, so clean and drain your boat and throw out leftover bait before leaving the shore.

Gull Harbour Campground is the park's main campground, near the north end of the island, and Bifrost Riverton Campground is about 33 km away; the park needs a vehicle permit all year.
