Riding Mountain is the forested upland above the farmland of western Manitoba, and most of it is Riding Mountain National Park, run by Parks Canada rather than the province. This page is centred on Wasagaming, the park's townsite on the south shore of Clear Lake. The lake covers about 29 km², and the province records lake trout, walleye, northern pike, cisco and whitefish in it. Katherine Lake, 5 km away, is a small lake with brook and rainbow trout. Outside the park boundary, the provincial land is a ring of wildlife management areas: Onanole (6 km), Proven Lake (12 km), Otter Lake (16 km), and Kenneth H. Wark and Harrison (both about 22 km). Sportsman's Park and the Onanole RV Park are within 4 km, and the Erickson campground is 17 km south. Our map shows 98 lakes, ponds and creeks within 25 km. This page rounds up the region's public land, fishing spots, campgrounds and road trips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Riding Mountain National Park is federal land with Parks Canada rules, so Manitoba's Crown land rules don't apply inside it. Outside the park, the nearest provincial land is the Onanole Wildlife Management Area, about 6 km from Wasagaming, followed by Proven Lake (12 km) and Otter Lake (16 km).

No. Clear Lake and every other water inside the national park need a Parks Canada fishing permit, and a Manitoba angling licence is not valid there. The province records lake trout, walleye, northern pike, cisco and whitefish in Clear Lake.

Inside the park you camp only in Parks Canada campgrounds or reserved backcountry sites. Just outside, Sportsman's Park and the Onanole RV Park are within 4 km of Wasagaming, and the Erickson campground is about 17 km south.

Winnipeg to Riding Mountain National Park is about 270 km, or three hours, and the Riding Mountain to Dauphin trip continues north through the park to Dauphin.

Regulations

Inside Riding Mountain National Park you need a Parks Canada park pass and fishing permit, and camping is limited to Parks Canada campgrounds and backcountry sites. On provincial waters outside the park, a Manitoba angling licence and barbless hooks are required; the area is in the Southern Division, where walleye close April 6 to May 8. Wildlife management areas post their own hunting and vehicle rules at each one.
