Crown Land around Chapleau
Chapleau is a railway town deep in the boreal forest at the end of Highway 129, best known for the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve on its doorstep — at roughly 7,000 square kilometres the largest crown game preserve in the world, where a century-old hunting and trapping ban makes moose, bear and other wildlife remarkably easy to see. Crown land begins at the town limits, the Kebsquasheshing River and Chapleau Lake fish within a few kilometres of downtown, and a ring of parks sits about a half hour out: The Shoals and Five Mile Lake on Highway 129, the Windermere Goldie Lake complex, Ivanhoe Lake to the northeast, and the Chapleau-Nemegosenda waterway park carrying a classic multi-day canoe route north. This page rounds up the region's public land, fishing spots, campgrounds and road trips.
