Winter fishing on Red River
Red River is in the Southern Division of Manitoba's angling regulations. Walleye and sauger are open May 9, 2026 to April 4, 2027, and most other species all year. The 2026 Anglers' Guide lists rules of its own for this water, shown below.
- All walleye and sauger shorter than 35 cm must be released.
- Closed to all fishing from April 6 to and including May 8.
- Dip netting and seining for bait fish only, not suckers (excluding the Special Conservation Area); no bow fishing allowed.
- Closed to all fishing and possession of fishing gear from April 1 to and including November 15.
- Shelters off by March 14, 2027, or sooner if a Conservation Officer orders it.
- Live bait fish may be used, except in stocked trout waters, Duck Mountain Provincial Park and Forest, Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Porcupine Provincial Forest, Whiteshell Provincial Park, the Winnipeg River from Seven Sisters Dam to the Ontario border, and Atikaki and South Atikaki provincial parks. Purchased live bait needs the dealer's three-day Live Bait Fish Transfer and Use Receipt. From April 1, 2027, live bait fish and leeches will be banned everywhere in Manitoba.
- You may fish with two lines through the ice (one in open water), with no more than two hooks or lures per line, and you must stay within 50 m of your lines.
- Barbless hooks are required on every line in Manitoba, ice fishing included.
Nearest climate station reporting snow: Stony Mountain (40 km away), 0 cm on the ground on October 31.
